Spring Lawn Care: How To Be Quick Green

Lawns create a neat and comfortable environment for our urban lives. Now that the Start of Spring has passed, everything in nature is coming back to life, and as the temperature gradually warms up, lawns are about to emerge from dormancy and enter the green – up stage. But how can we make the lawn turn green quickly and regain its vitality in the early spring when the temperature is still low?

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand the types of lawns. Warm – season grasses like Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass usually green up earlier. At this time, the key is to activate the root system. On the other hand, cool – season lawns such as Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass are still dormant due to the low temperature. For them, it’s necessary to keep warm and promote root growth while avoiding premature interference.

Use tools like rakes to remove the thatch layer accumulated during winter, keeping the thickness between 0.5 – 1 cm. Also, clear away debris like fallen leaves and twigs. This helps maintain good air circulation in the lawn, reduces the growth of pathogens, and minimizes damage to the grass roots.

2. Watering

Based on the weather and soil moisture, when the temperature stabilizes above 0°C, it’s time to water the lawn for the first time. This washes away the dust on the grass blades, enabling better photosynthesis. The more intensively the lawn is used, the more water it needs. For lawns that are three years old or older, dethatch the grass before watering. Remove the dead grass and scarify the turf to improve water and air permeability. Watering is best done in the morning or evening.

3. Soil Loosening

After years of growth, lawns may become compacted due to human trampling and low – frequency fertilization. Especially in northern regions, after the soil thaws each year, loosen the compacted areas to increase root aeration and drainage. Combine aeration with overseeding and fertilization, which can speed up the green – up process. You can directly apply KelpReal, diluted 500 – 800 times, for excellent results.

4. Mowing

Once the lawn starts to grow, perform the first mowing, keeping the height between 4 – 6 cm. Avoid over – mowing to prevent damage to the grass roots, which could affect the green – up. After mowing, spray a fungicide to prevent early – spring diseases.

5. Fertilizing

To achieve rapid green – up, choose composite fertilizer with high nitrogen and low phosphorus and potassium. Applying it in the early stage of green – up can promote the growth of terminal buds 7 – 10 days earlier and is beneficial for root growth. You can also apply water – soluble fertilizer in combination with the green – up watering.

6. Overseeding Grass Seeds

In spring, it’s advisable to repair the lawn early, fill in the frost – cracked soil seams, and patch up severely damaged areas. Before overseeding, mow the lawn, turn over the soil, apply high – quality lawn fertilizer “KelpReal“, and then sow the seeds. The sowing method is to scatter the seeds evenly, gently rake the soil to cover the seeds, and keep the soil moist.

7. Pest and Disease Control

Spring is a season with severe pest and disease problems. Timely control is crucial to prevent damage to the lawn.

8. Weed Control

Weed control is a vital part of spring lawn management. Especially before the lawn grass grows out, if the area is covered by weeds, the lawn is easily invaded. Chemical weed control needs to be targeted according to different lawn types and weeds. If you want to reduce weed growth in early spring, consult our technicians.
